The History of Blessed Births
Amy and her son Ford in Amish Country 1993
Amy Leland, the primary midwife and owner of Blessed Births, began her journey in Midwifery in the early 1990's. After receiving what she refers to as a "calling to midwifery," she began her education in earnest. While attending college in Virginia, Amy spent her clinical years in the Amish country in Pennsylvania. Amy had the privilege of studying under experienced midwives who had delivered well over 1000 babies in their careers. The Amish rely on their Midwives for a wide range of health care needs. This provided Amy with the opportunity to learn more broadly about the overall healthcare needs of women, with an emphasis on maternity care. Her extensive education is reflected in the excellent care she has provided to many 100's of mothers since moving to SC in 1997.
A pioneer in the history of Midwifery in SC, Amy opened the state's first freestanding licensed midwife-owned and operated birth center in 2000 in Greenwood. The opening was celebrated and warmly welcomed with a ribbon cutting ceremony attended by the Mayor, the Chamber of Commerce, TV stations from around the state, officials from the Department of Health, as well as a representative from the World Health Organization's Maternal/Fetal Health Division.
It was a great day for midwives in SC. In the years following the opening of the first Blessed Births facility, we are proud to know that SC now has birth centers sprinkled throughout the state. We believe that Midwifery care should be accessible as a choice to women everywhere.
'Midwifery care should be accessible to women everywhere'
After quickly outgrowing its first small facility, in 2004, Blessed Births moved to its current location at 23 Mills Avenue in downtown Greenville, SC. The new facility is complete with two private birthing suites where Amy Leland provides the intimate and meticulous care for which she is known. "I will continue to come to Blessed Births for my future pregnancies. I couldn't have asked for a better experience. Amy made me feel important, she cared about my health, my feelings, my baby, my concerns and our appointments were never hurried."
